Overview

Huascaran is a well-established Peruvian restaurant located at 208 W Glebe Rd in Alexandria, VA. For over 25 years, it has quietly built a reputation for serving traditional Peruvian dishes with a contemporary touch, blending vibrant flavors and fresh ingredients in a casual, no-frills setting. This spot is ideal for those looking to explore authentic Peruvian cuisine beyond the usual spots, whether you're a local food enthusiast or longing for a taste of Peru’s rich culinary heritage.

The menu at Huascaran is thoughtfully curated, featuring standout dishes like the Ceviche Mixto Especial, Lomo Saltado A la Criolla, and Ají de Gallina. These classics showcase a balance of savory, tangy, and spicy notes characteristic of Peruvian cooking. The Lomo Saltado arrives with a notably generous portion of tender beef, skillfully stir-fried with vegetables, accompanied by rice and fries. While some elements like fries and rice occasionally fall short in freshness, the dish's overall heartiness compensates well.

The Ají de Gallina is a comforting, creamy chicken stew that embodies Peru’s soulful home cooking. Despite its unusual appearance, it wins over diners with its rich flavor and satisfying portion size, often making for a perfect second-day meal after reheating. For seafood lovers, the ceviche variety offers fresh, bright, and tangy notes, though some have found certain preparations less consistent in texture and acidity.

Huascaran also embraces traditional Peruvian beverages such as Chicha Morada, a sweet purple corn drink that pairs beautifully with the diverse menu. The inclusion of vegan options highlights the restaurant’s adaptability to varied dietary preferences without compromising authenticity.

The dining experience is warm and inviting, marked by friendly, attentive service amidst a relaxed atmosphere that feels more like a neighborhood gem than an upscale dining destination. This unpretentious vibe makes it approachable for families, groups of friends, and solo diners alike, especially those curious about exploring Peruvian flavors in a comfortable setting. Parking convenience adds to the ease of visiting, encouraging both quick takeout and sit-down meals.

For newcomers and aficionados alike, Huascaran offers a genuine taste of Peru’s culinary diversity—from charcoal-grilled chicken and stuffed potatoes to hearty soups like Sopa de Mote and Parihuela de Mariscos. While not every dish is perfect, the overall experience delights with its vibrant, seasonal vegetables and balanced seasonings. It’s a place that invites return visits, promising a slice of Peruvian culture rooted in family traditions and bold flavors, right in the heart of Alexandria.

Don’t tell my Peruvian mom, but Huascaran’s food might be just as good as hers! We ordered takeout and it was really good! The Lomo Saltado had a VERY generous portion of beef. It sucks when restaurants give you like 3 tiny pieces of beef in your Lomo Saltado but this place did not disappoint! The fries and rice didn’t taste as fresh as the beef and veg but the rest of the dish made up for it. The Ají de Gallina was delicious and a huge serving. We’re saving half for tomorrow. Rice was fresh and cooked with garlic, yum! For those unfamiliar with Peruvian food, I know Ají de Gallina might look weird, but don’t let appearances deceive you and give it a chance. By the way, if you like spicy sauces, you’ll love their green sauce. Will try dining in next time! Parking was easy.

They have been their for 25 years and getting better with age. Traditional dishes have been updated the fresh and brightly colored vegetables with just the right amount of seasonings. We got one of each and shared around, everything was perfect and surprisingly the fish dishes were the groups favorite. Overall a great experience!!

Freindly and fast service. Food was pretty good. But felt the papa huancaina we're not very authentic and lacked flavor. Parts of the Ceviche mixto also seemed rubbery and overly acidic, not too fresh. Papusas we're great.

You may have overlooked this Peruvian food gem located next to an Alexandria super market like I have for so long. Yeah, you may be the only gringo in the place enjoying this superb Peruvian food and atmosphere. No worries! People are so busy enjoying the family-type meal prepared just for them that they won’t notice you. Charcoal grilled chicken, Aji de Gallina, stuffed potatoes, fried yuca (mandío shyryru), and more. Try this place. You may think you’ve been transported to another country.

This is a very casual restaurant..almost a dive. Don't expect anything fancy. The service is good. The wait staff are very pleasant and friendly. The food was surprisingly good. We ordered the Lomo Saltado, Aji de Galina, and Causa de Atun (Tuna). All 3 of us were happy with our dishes. Mine was tasty (Galina) but lukewarm. I took about half home and had it for lunch the next day...it was great when I heated it up!!

Exceptional customer service, ample parking availability, a spotless ambiance, welcoming owners and staff, the cuisine was notably fresh as it was prepared with care. The pricing for all the dishes was exceptionally reasonable.
